The BIFA files contain records for all buses that were involved in fatal traffic accidents in the 50 states and District of Columbia. A bus is defined as a vehicle designed to carry at least nine people, including the driver, that is not used for personal transportation. All the vehicles described are also contained in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) files, compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the respective years.
Each record in the BIFA data includes virtually all variables from the FARS files at the Accident, Vehicle, and Person (driver) level, plus data collected through the BIFA survey process describing the vehicle, company, driver, trip, and crash. Data from the BIFA survey process are contained in variables V1110 and higher. These fields provide the most accurate description of the buses.
Each BIFA data set is accompanied by a Codebook. Please consult the Codebook for available variables, as well as the Introduction for a description of how the data sets are constructed. Requests for consultation on and analysis of the data are welcome and may be addressed to Daniel Blower at [email protected].
