The TIFA files contain records for all the medium and heavy trucks that were involved in fatal traffic accidents in the 50 states and District of Columbia. Trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, primarily pickups, are excluded as “nonsample” (meaning they are not medium or heavy trucks), as are emergency vehicles and other non–trucks. All the vehicles described are also contained in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) files, compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the respective years.
Each record in the TIFA data includes virtually all variables from the FARS files at the Accident, Vehicle, and Person (driver) level, plus data collected through the TIFA survey process describing the vehicle, company, driver, trip, and crash. Data from the TIFA survey process are contained in variables V1001 and higher. These fields provide the most accurate description of the trucks.
Each TIFA data set is accompanied by a Codebook. Please consult the Codebook for available variables, as well as the Introduction for a description of how the data sets are constructed. Requests for consultation on and analysis of the data are welcome and may be addressed to Daniel Blower at [email protected].
